Overview

Don’t just sight see when you are in Yangon, get your hands dirty with the locals, as you unleash your inner artist.  Join local pottery artisans and learn about their ancient craft, as you try your own hands at a traditional pottery creation.  We escape the bustle of downtown Yangon with a ferry ride across the river, where we take a step back in time and explore the area’s more traditional communities. Then get your heart pumping as we enjoy a 20 minute hike to one of the country’s highest pagodas, Shwesandaw Pagoda, offering stellar views of the countryside.  Eat with the locals as we visit a popular restaurant, and get a taste for local flavours, before discovering a nearby market.  This is more than a tour, it is an experience.

Tour Itinerary

Your Yangon experience kicks off with a quick walk through the city’s streets, as we head down to the riverside and jetty.  From here, we board a public ferry full of locals and cross the mighty Yangon River.  Keep your cameras handy, as this 10 minute trip, offers fantastic views of daily river life.

Arriving at the other side of the Yangon River, we either take a private taxi or ‘dyna truck’ (a pick-up truck similar to a songthaew) through the countryside, as we head towards Twante. Discover this town where local potters work with traditional tools, local kilns and materials.   Here is where it starts getting messy, as we visit community artisans and not only see their products and learn how their work is produced, but we participate in a hands-on lesson, learning their skills and testing out their traditional pottery methods.

With our hands all clean again, it is time to work up a sweat, so we begin the 20 minutes uphill walk to reach Shwesandaw Pagoda, one of the highest pagodas in Myanmar.  You will be rewarded with fantastic views of the surrounding area and feel 1,000 years of history at your feet.

All that work and hiking will have left you hungry, so we head to a popular local restaurant which specializes in vegetarian cuisine.   Take advantage of the great location of the restaurant, situated close to the local market, and get out and explore the market at your own pace.

We then board the ferry again, returning to Yangon, but not before your guide has pointed out a few note-worthy sites on the ride back. Boarding the ferry, we cross the Yangon River and head back into downtown Yangon where your Hands-On day comes to an end.
